JOHN MEREDITH, London c1750

  JOHN MEREDITH, London c1750
Description:

A rare and imposing George III three train musical longcase clock.  The fine burr walnut case stands on block feet with a double plinth to the panel base.  The break arch hood is flanked by grooved pillars with inset brass reeds and brass capitals.  An interesting feature of this clock is the original setting up instructions together with an advertisement for John Meredith applied to the inside of the moulded trunk door.

The break arch brass dial is mounted with mask head spandrels around a silvered chapter ring with inset subsidiary dials for strike/silent and chime/not chime.  Within the arch is an inset cartouche signed by the maker within a floral enamel surround.  Across the upper sector of the arch is a tune selection offering a choice of four tunes.

The three train movement is of the highest quality with six knopped pillars and a nest of twelve bells struck by twenty hammers to play the music and a separate bell striking the hours.

John Meredith was a reputable maker of musical clocks working in London in the mid 18th century.
