Description:

A good Queen Anne walnut veneered longcase clock of small proportions.

The case is constructed of oak and pine and veneered with well figured walnut which has achieved good colour and patination.

Standing on a single plinth, the long moulded trunk door includes a brass lenticle.  The pull-forward hood with flat top and blind cut fretwork beneath is flanked by turned walnut pillars with brass capitals.

The very fine eight-day duration movement has six knopped and finned pillars, each locked to the dial plates.  The escapement is anchor and the hours are sounded on a bell via an inside countwheel.

The 11in square dial is mounted with a silvered chapter ring and crown and sceptre spandrels to the four corners.  The matted centre includes a subsidiary seconds ring, ringed winding aperture and day of the month.  The chapter ring is signed by the maker, William Grimes, London.

William Grimes is recorded as working in London during the last quarter of the seventeenth century through to the early eighteenth century.
