  JOSEPH BUCKINGHAM, London c1685
Description:

A particularly fine and small Charles II longcase clock.  The oak and pine carcass of the case is veneered in walnut oysters, with inset panels to the trunk and base of bird and floral marquetry with green stained bone leaves.  The sides and marquetry panels are contained within a border of boxwood.

The bun feet and alternate mouldings have an ebonised finish.  There is a lenticle to the trunk door and the rise up hood is flanked by ebonised barley twist columns.

The ten inch square dial is mounted with a silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and early winged cherub spandrels to the corners.  The dial is finely matted with an aperture above six o’clock to view the day of the month.  The hands are finely pierced and faceted.

The eight day duration five pillar movement has latches to the turned and knopped pillars.  Bolt and shutter maintaining power is included and the hours are sounded on a bell via an outside locking plate.

The dial plate is signed by the maker beneath six o’clock, Joseph Buckingham in ye Minories.
