Description:

A particularly fine nineteenth century English travelling clock.  The ebonised brass moulded case, glazed to all four sides and top, stands on adjustable brass bun feet and is surmounted by a gilt brass carrying handle. 

The five inch by four inch brass dial has an enamel chapter disc signed by the maker within a finely chased gilt brass filigree mask.   

The two train fusée movement includes a high quality compensated platform lever escapement with maintaining power and hour strike, with repeat, sounded on a gong.   The back plate is engraved with the maker’s signature and serial number 477.

EJ Dent was first in partnership with John Roger Arnold in 1830 at 84 The Strand.  In 1840 he established the company of Dent which was recognised as one of the finest companies of the time specialising in precision clocks.  As recognition of their ability, Dent was commissioned to make Big Ben in 1852.
