Description:

A particularly small and fine Charles II longcase clock.  The case is veneered with olivewood oysters with inset panels of marquetry to the base and trunk.  The floral marquetry has occasional green stained bone leaves all laid against an ebony ground. The mouldings to the case are alternately of ebonised fruitwood and cross grained olivewood.   The rise up hood is flanked by barley twist columns and there is a lenticle to the trunk door and bun feet to the base. 

The high quality eight day duration movement includes bolt and shutter maintaining power and latches to the ring pillars and also the dial feet.

The ten inch square dial is mounted with a narrow chapter ring and early ringed cherub spandrels.  The matted centre includes a subsidiary seconds dial and an aperture to view the day of month.  The dial plate is signed by the maker ‘Robert Seignior, Londini’ beneath six o’clock.

Robert Seignior is recorded as a maker of ‘great repute’.  He was apprenticed in 1660 and Free in 1677.
