DANIEL QUARE, London c1690

  DANIEL QUARE, London c1690
Description:

An exquisite William and Mary olivewood and marquetry longcase clock of one month duration.  The case is veneered with oysters of olivewood with ebonised mouldings and inset panels of bird and floral marquetry against an ebony ground to the trunk door and base.  Standing on bun feet, the case rises to a carved ebonised cresting supporting a gilt ball finial.

The 10 inch (25 cm) square dial is mounted with winged cherub spandrels and a silvered chapter ring.

The month duration movement is particularly fine, with six latched pillars and an outside locking plate.

Daniel Quare was one of the most celebrated clockmakers of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.  Examples of his work can be seen in major locations in museums around the world.
