Description:

An important mid-nineteenth century English carriage clock complete with its original felt lined, brass bound, mahogany travelling case with folding front slide.  The rear door opening to reveal the original numbered key. 

The finely chased brass case retains the original gilding and it is surmounted by a reeded and engraved carrying handle.  The similarly engraved and gilded dial has a polished chapter ring with typical McCabe fleur-de-lys hands and seconds ring at twelve o’clock.  The solid gilt engraved rear door with three shuttered winding squares for hand setting and winding, together with a strike silent lever and regulation index. 

The high quality eight day duration twin fusée movement has substantial plates united by turned tapering pillars.  The gilt under slung lever platform escapement has a monometallic balance and the going train includes maintaining power.  The movement includes hour strike on a gong with repeat operated from a plunger on the top of the case.  Both the movement and dial are signed and numbered.

James McCabe was one of the most eminent makers of the 19th century producing precision clocks and chronometers from his work shop at the Royal Exchange.
