BENJAMIN VULLIAMY no.354, LONDON c1803

Description:

A small and elegant George III mahogany veneered architectural longcase clock with excellent provenance.

The refined and well-proportioned case stands on block feet with a single plinth to the panelled base.  The moulded trunk door is flanked by canted and fluted columns which continue into the architectural hood.   A notable feature is the moulded hood door used by Vulliamy on his finest cases.

The 12 inch (30.5 cm) silvered and engraved brass dial has roman numerals, a seconds dial and strike silent above twelve o’clock.   The dial is simply signed ‘Vulliamy, London 354’.

The eight day duration five pillar movement has hour strike sounded on a bell and the clock is complete with the original wood rod pendulum and brass cased weights.

Benjamin Vulliamy was the second of the Vulliamy family who succeeded his father Justin.  He was clockmaker to George III and was responsible for several important precision clocks made for royalty and the aristocracy.  Examples of his work are included in museums and collections throughout the world.
