Description:

A small William & Mary walnut and marquetry longcase clock by Thomas Grimes.  The case is veneered in well-figured walnut with inset panels of floral marquetry against an ebony ground.  Standing on bun feet, there is a lenticle to the trunk door and the rise-up hood is flanked by barley twist columns.

The ten inch square dial is mounted with a silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and cherub and foliage spandrels to the four corners.   The centre is finely matted with an engraved rose to the centre.  There is an aperture to view the day of the month above six o'clock and the dial plate is signed by the maker beneath six o'clock, Thomas Grimes, Londini Fecit.

The high quality five pillar movement includes bolt and shutter maintaining power and outside countwheel striking on a bell.

Thomas Grimes is recorded as working in London during the last quarter of the 17th century.
