GEORGE HALLIFAX, Doncaster c1760
Description:
An exceptional George III mahogany barometer attributed to George Hallifax. The case is in the distinctive Hallifax style of a longcase clock and is veneered with richly figured mahogany which has achieved excellent patination. The moulded base and trunk rise to a break arch pediment with grooved free standing columns flanking the hood.
The break arch brass dial is mounted with a silvered and engraved register ring with an inner scale corresponding to the decimal divisions of the barometric inches; the outer ring registering the weather condition. The dial plate is engraved with four foliate designs to the centre and the four corners and the arch with the sun rising through clouds.
Although not signed, the distinctive style of this barometer is typical of George Hallifax, as are the laying and pattern of the veneers, together with the case and the style of engraving.
George Hallifax was the fourth son of John Hallifax, an already established clockmaker in Barnsley. George had moved to Doncaster by 1750, establishing his own reputation as a good clockmaker and later becoming mayor in 1775 and again in 1792.
