Description:

A rare and small James II quarter repeating spring table clock. The case, veneered with turtle shell with ebonised mouldings, stands on cast bun feet with foliate decorations. There are four corner finials flanking a gilt brass basket top with carrying handle above.

The 6 inch (15cm) square brass dial is mounted with a silvered chapter ring with four corner cherub and winged spandrels. There is a strike/silent option above twelve o’clock and an aperture to view the day of the month above six o’clock.

The twin fusée eight-day duration movement has a verge escapement and quarter repeating mechanism with the hours sounded on a large bell and the quarters on three smaller bells. The back plate of the movement is finely engraved with tulips and foliage around the maker’s signature, George Stevens in Drury Lane, London.

George Stevens is recorded as Free of the Clockmakers Company in 1673 and working from his premises is Drury Lane until 1693. He was a known associate of Daniel Quare and believed to have died in 1702. Clocks by Stevens are rare, possibly due to his collaboration with Quare.
