  EARDLEY NORTON no. 2192, London c 1775

An elegant George III three train quarter striking bracket clock.  The case veneered in richly figured mahogany with canted and reeded corners and carrying handles to the side; the bell top with five urn finials.

The eight inch arched brass dial is mounted with rococo spandrels, silvered chapter ring and strike silent in the arch.  Beneath twelve o’clock is a recess cartouche signed and numbered by the maker. Above six o’clock is an aperture to view the day and the month.

The three train fusée movement has a verge escapement and trip repeat, chiming the quarters on eight bells and the hours on a further bell.  The back plate is engraved with foliate scrolls around the maker’s signature.  Complete with a later associated wall bracket.

Eardley Norton is recorded as a maker of great repute who worked in St John’s Street, Clerkenwell during the last half of the eighteenth century.  Examples of his work are included in museums throughout the world and also in Buckingham Palace.
