JUSTIN VULLIAMY, London c1770

  JUSTIN VULLIAMY, London c1770

An important George III three train quarter striking table clock in an ebonised case mounted with finely pierced and engraved gilt brass frets to the sides, door and caddy top.

The case stands on moulded brass feet and has carrying handles to the sides.  There is a single flamed urn finial to the pediment.  The break arch brass dial is mounted with rococo spandrels around a white enamel dial.  There is a false pendulum aperture in the arch above the maker’s signature which is flanked by two subsidiary enamel disks for strike/silent and rise and fall regulation.

The three train fusée movement chimes the quarters on six bells and the hours on a separate bell.  The escapement is verge and the backplate is engraved with flowers and foliage.

Three train clocks by Justin Vulliamy are extremely rare.

Justin Vulliamy, c1710 to c1790, recorded as an eminent maker working in Pall Mall with his partner, Benjamin Gray.  They were appointed clockmakers to the King; examples of Justin’s work are in Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and G.M.
