  W & S JONES, Holborn, London c1800

A very fine George III bow front mahogany stick barometer lying flat to the wall.  The elegance of the swan neck case is emphasised by the ebony line around the stem, the ebony cistern cover and the swan neck pediment with an ivory urn finial.  The silvered register plates include a vernier scale and are signed by the maker.

W & S Jones are recorded as working in London from 1794 to 1860, during which time they occupied three different addresses in Holborn.   According to Sir Nicholas Goodison in English Barometers, they “remain well known as one of the leading and most prosperous firms in the instrument industry for most of the nineteenth century”.
