Anthony Woodburn

A fine George III bracket clock in a mahogany case with particularly small proportions, which has achieved wonderful colour and patination.  The bell top case, surmounted by a single brass carrying handle, with four pineapple finials.  The base stands on mounded brass feet and a particularly fine feature to the case is the canted and grooved corners with inset brass spines.
The brass engraved dial has a silvered finish with roman chapters and outer Arabic minutes.  There is an aperture beneath 12 o’clock to view the day of the month and a bold scroll signature beneath the winding arbors.  The pierced blued steel pointers are very much of the design favoured by John Ellicott and, unusually, there is a brass moulding on the inner edge of the door.
The two train fuseé movement has a verge escapement and hour strike sounded on a bell with pull repeat.  The backplate is delicately engraved in the rococo design.
This example would date circa 1765. 

Henry Stimpson is recorded as working in both Bath and London in the mid eighteenth century.  It is interesting to note the similarity of Stimpson’s work with that of John Ellicott which suggests possible collaboration between the two.
