VINER, Regent Street, London c1835
An important nineteenth century English travelling timepiece with one month duration and perpetual calendar. The engine-turned gilt brass case, with bronze shuttered rear door, has an enamel dial within an engine-turned mask.
The dial is signed by the maker with a subsidiary seconds below twelve o’clock and an up-and-down dial indicating the state of wind for twenty eight days. Beneath the main dial are two subsidiary dials indicating day of the month and day of the week. The month indicator is set on the back plate of the movement which is also signed by the maker.
The remarkable month duration movement has chain fusée maintaining power and a high quality compensated lever escapement.
Charles Edward Viner is recognised as one of the finest and most innovative makers of the 19th century.
