Anthony Woodburn

An exceptional George III wheel barometer.  The case veneered in satinwood with tulip wood cross banding and inlaid motifs to the base and pediment.  The case is surmounted by a delicately engraved brass urn.  The greater part of the lower stem with a long broad silvered engraved Fahrenheit thermometer, within a glazed and brass moulded housing.

The 6 ¾ inch diameter engraved and silvered register plate signed J. Miller Edinburgh within a mahogany and brass moulded bezel, has sculpted brass pointer with yesterday’s pointer controlled from the brass knob above the bezel.

John Miller was one of the most celebrated Scottish instrument makers.  He worked in Parliament close before moving to 38 South Bridge and later to Nicholson Street.  His barometers, although quite rare, were always of the highest quality.
