JOSEPH KNIBB, London c1685.

Description:

An important 17th century longcase clock made c1685 by Joseph Knibb.

The case is constructed of oak and deal and veneered in richly figured walnut.  The case stands on bun feet; the long trunk door has the lock in a high position – a feature in Knibb’s cases after 1677.  The rise-up hood is flanked by barley twist columns with a sound fret beneath the flat top.

The brass dial is ten inches square and mounted with a silvered chapter ring and cherub and foliage spandrels to each corner.  There is an aperture beneath twelve o’clock indicating the day of the month and the steel pointers are finely pierced and faceted.  The dial plate is signed by the maker beneath six o’clock.

The eight day duration movement is in fine original condition with latched dial feet and five latched ringed pillars.  The hours are sounded on a bell via an outside locking plate.
