Description:

A fine William III walnut and marquetry longcase clock.  The walnut veneered case with inset panels of bird and floral marquetry against an ebony ground.  The pull forward hood with barley twist columns flanking the marquetry inlaid door with sound fret above rising to marquetry inlaid caddy top supporting three walnut ball finials.

The eleven inch square dial is mounted with a silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and cherub and foliage spandrels to the four corners with floral engraving between.  The dial plate is signed by the maker beneath six o’clock.  The centre is finely matted with ringed winding holes and an aperture to view the day of the month.  The blued steel pointers are finely pierced and faceted. 

The five pillar latched eight day duration movement has an anchor escapement and hours strike on a bell via a fretted-out outside countwheel.  The clock is complete with brass cased weights and brass bob pendulum.

Jonathan Lowndes (Loundes) is recorded as a celebrated clockmaker working in Pall Mall at the turn of the 18th century.  He was a member of the Clockmakers’ Company from 1680 to 1710 and was Steward in 1696.  Several of his clocks were included in the Wetherfield Collection and he also made watches.
