JONATHAN LOWNDES, London

  JONATHAN LOWNDES, London
Description:

A William III quarter repeating spring table clock in an ebonised and brass mounted case.  The case, standing on turned brass bun feet, rises to a domed caddy with a double S carrying handle and flanked by four finials.

The brass dial is mounted with a silvered chapter ring and early cherub head spandrels.  Beneath twelve o’clock is an aperture to view the day of the month and another aperture to view the false pendulum.

The two train fusée eight day duration movement has a verge escapement and hours strike on a bell with the quarters repeated on the smaller bell.  The back plate is exquisitely engraved around the maker’s signature Jonathan Lowndes, Pallmall London.

Jonathan Lowndes (Loundes) is recorded as a celebrated clockmaker working in Pall Mall at the turn of the 18th century.  He was a member of the Clockmakers’ Company from 1680 to 1710 and was Steward in 1696.  Several of his clocks were included in the Wetherfield Collection and he also made watches.
