Description:
A particularly fine and small William and Mary quarter repeating timepiece by one of the most eminent English clockmakers. The case, which stands on gilt brass bun feet, is veneered in ebony with typical Quare gilt brass mounts and carrying handle to the domed caddy and grotesque cast escutcheons to the front door. The brass dial is mounted with early winged cherub spandrels and a silvered chapter ring. The centre is finely matted with a false pendulum aperture and an aperture above six o’clock to view the day of the month. The hands are finely pierced and faceted. The single train fusée movement has a verge escapement and pull quarter repeat with the hours sounded on a large bell and the quarters on a smaller bell. The back plate is beautifully engraved with scrolls around the maker’s signature, all within a wheatear border. Daniel Quare was one of the most celebrated clockmakers of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. His finest work was produced in the eighteenth century and examples of his work can be seen in major locations in museums throughout the world.
